Spring is undoubtedly my favorite time of year. Not only because the blazon Texas heat hasn't fully set in, but because it's the best time for antiquing! I've compiled a quick list of some of my favorite places to hunt for vintage wares and antiques.
Round Top / Warrenton Antique Weekend
Spring Show: March 22nd - April 6th
Antique Weekend might as well be my Super Bowl. Held each Spring and Fall in Round Top, Texas, thousands of people from around the country (and the world!) descend upon the small Texas town to either peddle their wares or shop for the perfect piece. [Note: Design gods like Nate Berkus and the curators of One Kings Lane have been seen scouring the fields in Round Top...] I'll have a more in-depth post regarding Antique Weekend next week [be sure to check back!], but in the meantime, check out the show calendar here.
Wimberley Market Days
1st Saturday of every month [March - December]
A quick 30 minute drive from Austin, Wimberley is truly a mecca for the antique aficionado. From vintage glassware to antique furniture, the vendors at Wimberley rarely disappoint.
April 26-27 [check calendar for more dates]
Held almost monthly at Austin's Palmer Event Center, hitting up City Wide Garage Sale is my new favorite pastime. It's similar to Wimberley's Market Days, yet in a smaller, air-conditioned space--and better people watching. I've found some amazing brass pieces, vintage glassware, and various other antique steals!
Weekly [click here to sign up for the e-mail list]
Hitting up estate sales during my lunch break is seriously a guilty pleasure. If you haven't been to one, you're missing out! By signing up with EstateSales.net
you'll get weekly emails with upcoming estate sales in your area. Each listing includes pictures, so you can decide ahead of time if it's worth going.
Tips for Antiquing
Are there any shows I'm missing? Leave a comment and let me know! And don't forget to check back next week for some Round Top posts!
- HAVE CASH! Vendors and dealers are always more willing to make a deal with you if you have cash over check or a credit card.
- Remember to look past rust, dust, and dirt. Most things can easily be cleaned--and everything benefits from a good coat of spray paint!
- Do your research! Brush up on the current trends so you know what you're looking for when you're shopping. For example, hot trends right now: anything brass [animal figurines, vases, candlesticks], colored milk glass, campaign style furniture, bamboo accents, etc...Know what things are worth so that you're not paying too much! eBay and Etsy are great points of reference for average pricing.
- Bring reusable shopping bags. Most vendors will have plastic bags, but it's so much easier when you have your own larger bag that you can load up and throw over your shoulder.
