[Disclaimer: I know St. Patrick's Day is over, but these DIYs are good for ANY holiday! Sorry for the delayed posting!]
Last week on Good Day Austin, I shared some simple and festive St. Patrick's Day ideas that can easily translate to any holiday or occasion, simply by switching out your color scheme. In case you missed last week's segment, click below for the video clip. I've also included more in depth instructions for the projects featured after the jump, so be sure to check those out!
Dip-Dyed Dinner Napkin
I'll admit, I was kind of nervous to work with fabric dye for the fear of accidentally turning everything in my house green, but the process was SUPER easy, and I managed to only dye the napkin. Success! I purchased some plain white napkins from World Market (check for sales here!), and used tried and true Rit fabric dye in Kelly Green.
I used the stove top method [per the instructions on the box], using 8 cups of water, one box of the powdered dye, and 1/8 cup of salt to help the dye adhere to the cotton napkins. After the solution was hot, I simply dipped the napkin about 1/3 or so of the way in the pot, and let it soak for about a minute. I then pulled it out (carefully!), and ran the dyed portion under cold water to remove any excess dye. Using the liquid dye, I added more dye to my solution so it was a bit more concentrated, and it would help me achieve the ombre effect I was going for. I then placed the bottom portion of the napkin back in the dye and let it soak for another two minutes. Once I reached the desired color, I ran it back under cold water and threw it in the wash. Be sure to use minimal detergent and wash on cold using the delicate cycle. Dry at medium heat, and then iron. Your napkins will be washing machine safe from now on!
Hand Painted Napkin
Using the Rit Liquid Dye--straight from the bottle, not diluted--I painted small circles along the edge of the napkin. I let the dye fully dry and then ran the napkin under cold water, like the previous one, to remove any excess. Follow the same washing instructions as above.
Drink Stirrers
Striped straws + gold tape. It's as easy as that! I cut the ends of the tape to look like a flag, to make them a little more festive. As mentioned in the segment, guests can write their names on their straws too so that they can serve as drink markers!
Etched Glass Pint Glasses
For this I used Martha Stewart's Frost Etching Effect Paint on a pint glass I already had at home and then I followed her instructions here. To make things even easier, check out these pre-made glass etching kits from one of my favorite DIY sites, Darby Smart here, here and here! All of the supplies you will need are included along with step-by-step instructions on how to execute this project without fail.
